JEE Main Cutoff 2027: Expected Cutoff for General, OBC, SC and ST

ttdigitals Blog JEE Main Cutoff 2027 1

JEE aspirants are always asking the same question: What is the JEE Main cutoff?

It is understandable for a future candidate of JEE Main 2027. It is always significant to know what is the cutoff as it gives a decent understanding about the competition and allows us to set the goal. But here comes the important nuance – the JEE Main qualifying cutoff and the marks required for getting into the college are not the same.

The official JEE Main 2027 cutoff figure will be available after the marks are announced, but prior to that students can use the latest official information to know what the qualifying cutoff is going to be.

The recent source of information regarding this is JEE Main 2026. NTA reported the number of unique applicants equal to about 15,38,468 in both January and April. The official qualifying percentiles for JEE Advanced eligibility were 93.4123549 for UR, 80.9232583 for OBC-NCL, 82.4164528 for EWS, 63.9172792 for SC and 52.0174712 for ST.

For students preparing at JEE Classes in Maharashtra or elsewhere, these numbers are useful – but they should not become the final target.

JEE Main 2027 Expected Cutoff

NTA has yet to announce the cutoff for 2027. However, taking current trends into account, some who are interested may construct their broad plan.

Category	Expected JEE Main 2027 Qualifying Percentile*	2026 Official Cutoff
General / UR	93-95	93.4124
EWS	81-83	82.4165
OBC-NCL	80-82	80.9233
SC	61-64	63.9173
ST	49-53	52.0175

*Expected ranges are indicative and not issued by NTA.

The actual cutoff for 2027 may vary depending on student performance in the exam and level of competition.

What Is the JEE Main Qualifying Cutoff?

The qualifying cutoff is the minimum NTA percentile used for determining eligibility for JEE Advanced, subject to the applicable eligibility conditions.

For JEE Main 2026, NTA published the following category-wise thresholds:

UR: 93.4123549 percentile
EWS: 82.4164528 percentile
OBC-NCL: 80.9232583 percentile
SC: 63.9172792 percentile
ST: 52.0174712 percentile

NTA also reported that candidates who appeared in both JEE Main sessions were considered using their best NTA score for the final result.

This is an important distinction because students often assume that crossing the qualifying cutoff means they have secured a seat in an NIT or IIIT.

Qualifying Cutoff vs College Admission Cutoff

Think of JEE Main in two stages.

1. Qualifying cutoff

The factor in determining eligibility for JEE Advanced is the performance level of candidates in JEE Main.

The year 2026 saw JEE Advanced demand candidates receive their ranks among the top 2,50,000 successfully passing candidates in the JEE Main B.E./B.Tech. examination, depending on eligibility parameters.

2. Admission cutoff

This is a different matter.

For NITs, IIITs and other participating institutions, admission depends on factors such as:

JEE Main rank
Category
Home-state or other applicable quota
Institute
Engineering branch
Seat availability
Counselling round

Therefore, a student targeting a competitive branch at an NIT should not prepare merely to cross the qualifying cutoff.

Clearing the cutoff keeps the door open. Your rank determines which doors are realistically available.

Why Does the JEE Main Cutoff Change Every Year?

There is no permanent JEE Main cutoff that remains identical every year.

Several factors can influence the final qualifying percentile.

Number of candidates

Competition is an obvious factor.

In 2026, more than 16 lakh unique candidates registered, while more than 15.38 lakh appeared across the two sessions.

The size and performance of the candidate pool can affect the final qualifying threshold.

Difficulty level

The difficulty of the examination can influence how marks translate into percentile.

This is why saying “you need exactly X marks to qualify” before the examination is unreliable.

Overall performance

Cutoffs are ultimately determined after the examination data is processed. If the performance distribution changes, the qualifying threshold can change too.

Is securing 95 percentile enough for a candidate appearing in JEE Main 2027?

The answer to the question depends on your understanding of the term enough.

If it means obtaining a higher percentage than the qualifying cutoff, then it might be correct to say that it would be enough.

If you are asking whether it guarantees admission to a particular NIT, IIIT or branch, the answer is no.

College admission cannot be determined from the qualifying cutoff alone.

A student aiming for a highly competitive branch should work towards a significantly stronger rank rather than planning around the minimum qualifying percentile.

What Should JEE Main 2027 Aspirants Actually Target?

This is where preparation strategy becomes more important than cutoff predictions.

If IIT is your goal

Do not make the JEE Main qualifying cutoff your preparation target.

In connection with the eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced, it must be noted that eligibility for JEE Main is important only for determining eligibility; admission to IITs is determined through the JEE Advanced score and the admission procedures.

The eligibility criteria set for JEE Advanced in 2026 states that the candidate must belong to the top 2.5 lakh JEE Main candidates among others.

Hence, you need to prepare for both aspects of solving problems related to JEE Main and JEE Advanced.

If NIT or IIIT is your goal

Work backwards from the branch and institute you want.

There is a major difference between saying:

“I want an NIT.”

and saying:

“I want Computer Science at a particular NIT.”

The second goal requires a much more specific rank-based preparation strategy.

How to Prepare for JEE Main 2027

Instead of monitoring the expected cutoff every now and then, it is better to concentrate on the things that you can control.

Build strong concepts

Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics require a strong conceptual understanding.

Do not just memorize the methods and the solutions.

Try to solve previous year’s questions as well.

Previous-year JEE questions help you understand:

Question patterns
Difficulty levels
Frequently tested concepts
Time pressure
Your own weak areas

Take regular tests

A test should not be treated as just a scorecard.

After every test, identify:

Questions answered incorrectly
Questions left unanswered
Questions that consumed too much time
Silly mistakes
Weak chapters
Concepts that need revision

Revise repeatedly

JEE preparation is not about completing the syllabus once.

A chapter that was easy three months ago can become rusty if you never revisit it.

Build revision into your weekly schedule rather than waiting until the last few weeks.

What Should Students Look for in JEE Coaching?

Choosing coaching is another major decision, particularly for students comparing JEE Classes in Pune.

Do not choose an institute only because it uses words such as “top”, “best” or “No. 1” in its advertising.

Look at the actual academic system.

Faculty

Check who teaches Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and whether the faculty has experience with competitive-exam preparation.

Test series

Regular testing should be part of the programme, not something added just before the examination.

Study material

Look for structured material covering concepts, practice questions and previous-year JEE questions.

Doubt-solving

A student should have a clear way to get help when a concept or problem remains unclear.

Performance tracking

Good coaching should help students understand where they are improving and where they are losing marks.

JEE Main Expected Cutoff 2027: Things to Remember by Students

While it is wise to take note of expected cutoff, you should not get obsessed with cutoff figures.

For 2027, students may take note of the following range:

General/UR: around 93-95 percentile
EWS: around 81-83 percentile
OBC-NCL: around 80-82 percentile
SC: around 61-64 percentile
ST: around 49-53 percentile

These are not official 2027 cutoffs.

NTA will publish actual cutoff numbers only after the results of JEE Main 2027 are announced.

Also, remember that being eligible for taking a IIT, NIT or any other premier engineering college does not mean that you have achieved your target final goal.

To kick off your JEE preparations, it’s simple: decide what college you want to get into, determine the rank needed, and base your preparations on that rank.

In case you’re not sure whether to enroll in JEE tuition classes at Pune, IIT JEE classes at Baramati or are simply looking for a reliable institute to join, your option should guarantee prompt lectures, timely testing, adequate feedback, and improvement time.
