JEE Mains & JEE Advanced: Complete Study Guide & Expert Tips

JEE prep has a strange habit. It makes you think others are miles ahead.

One person claims they are done with three chapters.  Another person talks about solving tough problems all day.  Yet another says they study for 10 hours.  After that, your own work starts to feel like it is not enough.

JEE Main and JEE Advanced are hard exams. Still, your plan does not need to be messy.

The key is simple. You must know what to study. You must know when to revise. You must know which questions to practice. And you should also know what to skip so time does not get wasted.

JEE Main is run by the National Testing Agency, NTA.  It is used for admission to places like NITs, IIITs, and other colleges that take part.  It is also the qualifying path for Indian students who want to appear for JEE Advanced.  JEE Advanced is the exam for admission to the IITs.

So if your target is an IIT, NIT, or another top engineering college, plan smart. Do not let it become one endless timetable.

JEE Main and JEE Advanced: Same topics, different focus

The subjects overlap, but your approach has to change.

JEE Main	JEE Advanced
Focuses strongly on speed and accuracy	Tests deeper conceptual thinking
Time management is crucial	Problem-solving approach is crucial
Questions can be direct or application-based	Questions can combine multiple concepts
Previous-year questions are extremely useful	Advanced-level problem practice is essential
Smart question selection matters	Logical thinking matters even more

JEE Main asks, “Can you solve this correctly and quickly?”

JEE Advanced often asks, “Can you figure out how to solve this in the first place?”

First Rule: Stop Collecting Study Material

You don’t need 14 books.

You need to finish the right material properly.

Start with the official syllabus and divide chapters into three buckets:

• Green: Comfortable with concepts and questions
• Yellow: Understand the basics but make mistakes
• Red: Weak, incomplete or barely studied

Physics: Understand First, Memorise Later

Physics becomes much less scary when you stop treating it as a formula-storage competition.

Instead of asking:

“Which formula should I use?”

ask:

“What is actually happening in this problem?”

Build every chapter in this order:

Concept → basic questions → JEE Main questions → mixed problems → tougher questions

This approach becomes especially important when you’re learning how to master JEE Physics numericals, where the same concept can appear in several different forms.

But don’t chase “important chapters” while ignoring everything else. A strong JEE score comes from broad syllabus coverage plus strong command over your better areas.

A simple Physics trick

Whenever you get a question wrong, write down why.

Was it:

• A concept gap?
• A formula mistake?
• A calculation error?
• A diagram problem?
• A question you simply didn’t know how to start?

Your mistakes will start showing patterns.

That’s useful information.

Chemistry: Three Subjects Hiding Inside One

Chemistry needs a slightly different strategy.

Physical Chemistry

Think concept + formula + practice.

Don’t just memorise equations. Understand what each quantity means and practise enough numericals to recognise patterns.

Organic Chemistry

Don’t turn Organic into a giant reaction-memorising exercise.

Build your fundamentals first—especially mechanisms, electronic effects, acidity/basicity and stereochemistry. Once the logic clicks, reactions become easier to remember.

Inorganic Chemistry

Here, repeated revision matters.

Make short notes. Revise them frequently. Connect trends and reactions instead of trying to memorise random facts the night before a test.

A useful Chemistry cycle is:

Learn, then revise, then practise, then test. Do it again and again.

The edits do not vanish. They return, and that is the goal.

Mathematics: You really cannot skip practice.

Math lessons are often treated like they are enough, but they usually are not.

You may follow every step in a lesson.

Still, when the same idea shows up in a new shape, you get stuck. So solve. Regularly.

Some chapters will naturally need more practice than others. The high-weightage Mathematics chapters for JEE Main, for instance, deserve enough question practice for you to get comfortable with different ways a concept can be tested.

Work through:

• Algebra
• Calculus
• Coordinate geometry
• Trigonometry
• Probability
• Vectors and 3D geometry
• Statistics

And don’t only solve questions you know how to solve.

Spend time with the ugly ones.

The question that takes 20 minutes and teaches you a new approach may be more valuable than five questions you could solve in two minutes.

The 3-Stage JEE Plan That Actually Works

You don’t need a complicated 17-step productivity system.

Three broad stages are enough.

Stage 1: Build Your Base

Focus on:

• Understanding concepts
• Completing chapters
• Making short notes
• Solving foundational questions
• Regular revision

Don’t panic if your first few tests aren’t spectacular. IIT JEE motivation isn’t about getting everything right from the beginning. It’s about building a routine you can actually stick to and improving as you go.

You’re building the engine before worrying about the speedometer.

Stage 2: Push Your Problem-Solving

Once concepts are reasonably strong, increase question difficulty.

Mix:

• Chapter tests
• Previous-year questions
• Mixed-topic sets
• Timed practice
• JEE Advanced problems

This is when preparation starts becoming more exam-oriented.

Stage 3: Test Like the Real Exam

Near the exam, full-length mock tests become essential.

But here’s the catch:

Taking a mock without analysing it is only half a test.

After every mock, classify your mistakes.

Regular JEE mock tests are useful not just for checking your score, but for spotting where you lose marks, how you manage time, and which areas keep troubling you.

After every mock, classify your mistakes.

What Went Wrong?	Your Next Move
Didn’t know concept	Relearn it
Forgot formula	Revise it
Calculation error	Practise accuracy
Ran out of time	Improve question selection
Panicked	Practise more timed tests
Took unnecessary risk	Control guessing

Your mock score tells you where you are.

Your mistake analysis tells you how to improve.

Previous-Year Questions: Your Best Reality Check

PYQs should not be treated as something you solve two weeks before JEE.

Use them throughout preparation.

They show you:

• How concepts are actually tested
• The level of application expected
• Common question patterns
• Where your preparation is weak
• How quickly you can solve exam-style questions

And don’t immediately check the solution when a question looks difficult.

Give yourself a genuine attempt first.

Even a failed attempt can teach you how your thinking breaks down.

How Many Hours Should You Study?

Forget the competition over study hours.

JEE doesn’t award marks for sitting at a desk.

It rewards correct answers.

For a full study day, a reasonable framework could look like this:

Work	Approx. Time
Classes/concept learning	3–4 hours
Question practice	3 hours
Revision	1–1.5 hours
Mistake analysis	30 minutes

That’s roughly 7.5–9 hours of focused academic work, but it doesn’t need to look identical every day.

A school student, a dropper and someone approaching the exam will naturally have different schedules.

Revision Is Where Ranks Are Built

Students love finishing chapters.

Nobody gets excited about revising them.

Unfortunately, your brain doesn’t care.

Without revision, that chapter you “finished” three months ago can start looking suspiciously unfamiliar.

Try a simple cycle:

Same day → after a few days → after two weeks → monthly

Keep revision material compact:

• Formula sheets
• Reaction summaries
• Short concept notes
• Error logs
• Frequently forgotten facts

Your revision notebook should be something you can actually open before an exam—not a 400-page autobiography.

Preparing for JEE Advanced? Start Early

If IIT is your target, don’t treat JEE Advanced as a problem for “after JEE Main.”

Build deeper problem-solving habits throughout preparation.

Gradually introduce questions involving:

• Multiple concepts
• Unfamiliar situations
• Logical deductions
• Longer chains of reasoning
• Different possible approaches

But don’t make every question an Advanced-level monster.

The progression should be:

Strong basics → JEE Main practice → Advanced problem-solving

Skipping the first step usually creates more confusion than confidence.

In 2026, to be eligible for JEE Advanced as an Indian candidate, you needed a rank within the top 2,50,000 among the successful candidates in the JEE Main B.E./B.Tech. paper. You also had to meet the other eligibility conditions that were listed in the rules. Always read the latest official brochure, since the requirements may change from one exam year to the next.

Five JEE Mistakes That Waste Serious Time

1. Changing Teachers Every Week

Different explanation styles can help occasionally. Constantly switching usually creates gaps.

Pick a reliable source and stick with it.

2. Ignoring Weak Chapters

Studying only your favourite chapters feels great.

Your rank may disagree.

3. Taking Tests for the Score

A mock isn’t supposed to make you feel good.

It’s supposed to expose your weaknesses while there is still time to fix them. How top JEE students use mock tests is less about chasing a higher score every week and more about understanding what each test is telling them.

Look at the questions you got wrong, the ones you left, the time you spent, and the mistakes you keep repeating.

4. Comparing Your Preparation With Everyone Else

Someone else’s 12-hour schedule isn’t your benchmark.

Your improvement from last month is.

5. Treating Sleep Like Wasted Time

Late-night studying may feel heroic.

Being exhausted during the actual exam isn’t.

Protect your sleep, especially as the exam approaches.

What Should You Do in the Final Months?

When the exam is getting close, resist the urge to start everything from zero.

Your priorities should be:

1. Revise what you’ve already studied.
2. Fix high-impact weak areas.
3. Solve PYQs.
4. Take full-length mocks.
5. Analyse every serious mistake.
6. Revise formulas, reactions and key concepts.
7. Practise choosing which questions to attempt.

And remember: you don’t have to solve the entire paper.

You have to solve the right questions accurately.

That is a very different objective.

Final Word: Don’t Prepare Harder. Prepare Smarter.

JEE preparation is a long game.

There will be days when you solve 30 questions and feel unstoppable. There will also be days when one chapter makes you question every career decision you’ve ever made.

Both are normal.

What matters is what you do next.

Do not skip the syllabus. Learn each concept in a clear way. Put in study time every day. Go back to topics before they fade. Solve PYQs to see how the questions really look. Take full mock tests seriously. Also keep track of mistakes, and write down where marks are slipping.

Most of all, do not mix up busyness with real preparation.

For those aiming at JEE Main and JEE Advanced, having a clear plan, regular checks, and solid teaching on core topics can help you stay on track. Chaitanya’s Academy’s JEE Classes in Maharashtra support students with a method that focuses on concepts, practice, and exam planning.

The target isn’t to study every waking minute.

The target is to walk into the JEE exam knowing you’ve trained for the questions—not just prepared for the timetable.
